A lot of pros started out natural and won their first state level shows without touching gear or without using much. Some of the big guys still aren't using much. Then there are others who use a ton to make up for poor genetics. If you have to use a ton of gear to get to the state level and be competitve, you might want to rethink your plan. The higher the level of competition, the more genetics play a role. You might be able to win a state show on conditioning, but then to win a national show, you are going to have to have it all, and drugs will only do so much. Even if you can "out drug" some of your competition, most pros never will make a living through competiing. You'll still have to be a personal trainer and try to get sponsorship. There are many a handful of people that are making a living through their placings. Basically, you have a better chance at being a rock star in a band.
So I just said a lot of real stuff, and I don't mean it to be hurtful, but you need to be realistic. Take this one step at a time. Have a plan to make money. If you love fitness, thats awesome. Find your own path in the industry. There is money to be made and if you can make money, you can stay connected to the sport you love.
If you want to compete, that sounds like a great idea, but don't think that it's the gear that will turn you pro. If you are meant to be pro, it's probably going to happen regardless of how much you take. If you are natural, start with the same 12 wk cycle that I would suggest to anyone else that is starting out in gear.
