Yes peptides are best run with gear. The effect of the GH releasing peps are minimal. On their own, the results you get will be small, but they are pushing your body in the right direction. Adding them into a test cycle would add a small amount of additional progress.
GH does help reduce fat. Taking GH releasing peps like GHRP will help you to lose more fat, faster. I have had decent experiences with GHRP2 or 6 at 300-500mcg, combined with CJC No/Dac at 250-300mcg. I have taken this combo 3x a day along with IGF and GH. If you can afford real growth, even at 2iu, I feel you would be better off than using these GH releasing peptides.
If peps are the way you want to go, I would also look into Frag. I have not used it but it is specifically the fat burning portion of the GH amino chain
