Good question brother. This is a big issue for many guys, espeically competitors. The key is to manipulate food as the main key to your plan and then use cardio as just the added push. I start guys out low with cardio and try to keep it as limited as possible. Of course, there are is a point that, to get lean enough, you have to crank cardio. Keeping cardio as low impact as possible makes a difference. Slow steady state preserves more muscle than running or HIIT...at least in my experience.
Also, another option is drugs. Say for instance you are considering what weekly changes to make. Lets say that with where you were, you wanted to add 10 min cardio to keep things moving. The drugs won't eliminate the need for cardio but you may be able to strike a better balance than guys not figuring the diet and fat burners into the mix
Also, if it is for a show, you can plan to come in early. If you are ready with 4 wks to go, you can cut cardio down some and give yourself a chance to fill them back out
