To Carb or Not to Carb...
    on: 2015-08-13 18:38:47
Hey Brother,So the common thinking for your post workout shake seems to be 2:1 ratio or carbs to protein, e.g., 2 parts waxy maize to 1 part whey isolate. The issue is the added calories, and is it really necessary. So, I came across this article from the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, which states the following. "The first and foremost reason to ingest carbs post workout is to replenish glycogen stores." Additionally, "The main purpose of a ratio of carbs to protein is to further stimulate protein synthesis." According to this article and the research conducted:"As it turns out, this extra insulin boost from high-glycemic carbs is probably not necessary. While insulin is needed for protein synthesis, it seems that the low amounts stimulated by protein alone are sufficient for the creation of new muscle. In fact, the researchers found post-exercise insulin levels that were thirty times higher than resting insulin levels did not seem to affect protein synthesis."Your thoughts?Ref: Vandré Figueiredo, et. al., “Is carbohydrate needed to further stimulate muscle protein synthesis/hypertrophy following resistance exercise,” Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition 2013, 10:42.

Great thoughtful question bro. I don't think you need carbs to absorb protein. Even with no carbs in your diet, your body will produce the carbs needed through gluconeogenesis. So when dieting on low carbs, I wouldn't worry about your body not making use of your protein. But when you're trying to grow, you want to have more than the minimum. The more carbs you can handle, the better you can grow. I don't know if I would agree with a couple things. Like the 2;1 ratio. Everyone is different. Some guys would get super fat eating 2 to 1, carbs to protein. Also, I can tell you first hand that insulin plays a much bigger role than this artile makes it sound, when it comes to growing new muscle. In fact, insulin is maybe the most important hormone for muscle growth as long as you are responding to it. It is so anabolic bro. I can take a guy, put him on the right protocol of insulin, the right diet to match his goals and needs, and he will blow up more in a month than on anything else. I can tell you first hand, that if I add insulin to my program, I can see a major difference in my size, weight and muscle roundness, sometimes within a day.

I don't want to come across like I'm anti-science. I just know what makes sense in the real world. I see all sorts of studies that leave me scratching my head. It just doesn't make sense in the real world. I don't know if that makes me a bro-scientist or what haha? I just know what works in the real world. I'll apply science when it works. To me though, this just doesn't make sense. The more carbs and the more cals you put into a body, the bigger that body gets, ya know? It really is that simple.
