White rice during contest prep and late night cravings during contest prep?
    on: 2013-08-16 07:45:50
I'm a little bit into my contest prep, still have 10 more weeks to go. I'm 5 foot 8, 195 pounds and roughly 10% bf. I do a half a cup of brown rice with 4 out of my 6 meals. Is it bad to switch to white rice for the rest of the prep or would it just hurt me ? Also any tricks to fight night time carb cravings ? It's starting to become s problem.

ah, yes. well the good news is, you're on the right track. if you arent suffering, you probably aren't working hard enough. i will give you a few suggestions that may help, but the biggest help will come from within. the best thing you can do is embrace this very unique experience. i focus on finding gratitude. i remind myself how lucky i am to be able to compete. i remind myself how lucky i am to have my health...to have my support system...to have my sponsors. things like that. i remind myself of the people that look up to me in life. if you compete, there are people who look up to you. maybe people at work. maybe your family. guys and gals at the gym. i remind myself of the pride i take in my work ethic. i also focus on keeping perspective on my prep and the time left. every day...even every hour can feel like forever when you suffer in the diet. i remind myself that "i can do anything for X amount of wks". i remind myself that this prep is going to be over so quickly (prep always goes by fast) and that i want to look back knowing that i did my best and can be proud to put my name on the work and effort i put in.  i also know that i'm not alone. if i feel this way, there is a good chance that everyone else that i'll be standing next to is going through the same thing. im very competitive and there is no way in hell that i am going to let someone outwork me. there are some things you can't change in the last 10 wks. at that point, you're pretty much made the majority of the size gains that you're going to make, so you can't control someone else being bigger than you. also, you might not have as good of genetics as someone else and there is nothing you can do to change that. these are things you have no power over at this point. BUT, there are factors you can control. can control!!! how hard you're willing to work is one of them. so ask youself, do you have what it takes? can you put in the work that it takes to be a winner? if the answer is yes, then you'll learn to welcome in the hunger and let it remind you that it is carrying you to where you need to be.

now that i have that out of my system(and i hope it helps), lets talk about a few tips. fist is drink lots of water. water will fill your stomach and make you feel more full. plus, you need it to stay healthy and strong. when you're tired of water, pour a glass with some fresh lemon. adds a whole world of flavor. i fill my glass with ice and when my lemon water is gone, i chew on the ice cubes. another option is crystal lite, i try not to use too much and will cut it out 4 wks out, as i remove artifical sweetners from the diet at that time. you can also freeze your dirnk and have a slush or make a popcicle. next, sugar free fiber powder expands and give you a very full sensation. its great for late night hunger. i used fiber powder to keep my midsection flat and keep me regular on my high protein diet, but this is also a good benefit. and last, sugar free gum. the chewing sensation helps ease discomfort

as for white rice, im not a fan in prep mode. i have a fast metabolism, but i still feel that brown rice is better for my needs, releasing slowly, over a longer period. if you tend to store fat, i would stay away from startchy carbs right now. i can't say if it'll work for you, as i don't know your body, but i would not use it, accept to carb up at the end
