I would suggest keeping the protein high and as you lower carbs, increase proteins and possibly fats. I wouldn't just cut out 1000 cals right away. I would start with a 200 cal reduction, coming mostly from carbs and possibly fats and then watching your response. If you need to speed the process, or if you need to reduce more, to get a good fat loss effect, I would then reduce another 200 cals, once again, mostly from carbs and maybe a little fat.
Everyone is unique and every time someone diets, their response is unique. So I can tell you that this is the way I would initially go about figuring out what someone needs. Always take it in small steps and watch your body closely. On or off gear, dieting is going to be similar. Just remember that while on, your body is better protected and you can push yourself further without risking as much muscle loss. IME though, its a lot harder to lose muscle than some guys think. If you make small changes a long the way, you should be able to ensure that you retain as much as possible.
And no need to be sorry brother! Not a naive question at all! If everyone knew how to do this, everyone would be big and ripped, but we both know that is not the case!!! haha.
